Dear Colleagues,
We are excited to invite you to the inaugural launch of the ESMO Working Group on Coupled Modeling (WGCM) Forum: Frontiers in Earth System Modelling, which will be a part of the upcoming CMIP Community Workshop 2026, taking place from 9 to 13 March, 2026 in Kyoto, Japan.
This new initiative aims to bring together modelling centres from across the global climate science community, including both CMIP consortium members and independent modelling groups. The WGCM Forum will provide a dedicated platform for enhanced collaboration and knowledge transfer among model developers, users, and researchers worldwide. Special emphasis will be placed on creating pathways for smaller and emerging modelling centres to engage with the broader community.
The Forum launch will comprise of short presentations and interactive discussions covering:
- ESM development and evaluation, including error analysis and intercomparisons
- Process complexity, including links with regional processes and km-scale models
- ML integration in ESMs, including emulators, AI and hybrid models
- Computational and modelling architecture, practices and challenges across centers
This launch begins what we envision as an annual forum for ongoing collaboration. Your participation will help shape the future direction of this initiative.
Please take a look at the CMIP26 event webpage for further information on attending the workshop and the forum. Due to room size limitations, we ask you to nominate up to two representatives from your organisation to participate in the launch event. Remote participation for additional representatives or those unable to join in person will also be possible, and a detailed program will be made available at a future date.
Alongside the launch event, we are building a database of modeling centres and research groups involved in Earth System Modeling. Please let us know the contact information for representatives from your group
