Summary and Motivation

Identified as a priority at the first WGCM Forum during the CMIP Community Workshop in Kyoto (March 2026), the workshop will bring together 100–120 international experts to address key challenges in tuning and calibrating Earth System Models, with a focus on CMIP7 and km-scale models.

Objectives of the workshop

The workshop aims to:
  • Advance the scientific understanding of model tuning and calibration in next-generation ESMs
  • Identify best practices and emerging methodologies, including machine learning approaches and uncertainty quantification
  • Addressing the trade-off between high spatial resolution, high complexity and a large ensemble, depending on the scientific research question
  • Foster collaboration and information exchange between established modelling centres and emerging groups
  • Strengthen international networks and provide opportunities for early career researchers to engage with leading experts
  • Provide a platform to discuss ESM outcomes and prepare for future coordinated experiments
  • Contribute to rapid, high-impact publications by mid-2027, leveraging ESM simulations such as CMIP7 and km-scale
  • Share development lines for next generation models
